Edgewater Glen Supports Start-Up Bakeshop and Shared Kitchen

Our neighbors Kate & Paige are in the final push for opening their start-up bakeshop and shared kitchen in our neighborhood at Norwood & Broadway. You can check out their video and help them cross the finish line with their Indiegogo Campaign here: Be the ‘cherry on top’ for Edge of Sweetness!

Welcome, Edge of Sweetness to the neighborhood!

When Chefs Kate Merrill and Paige Tyler took the leap into their first small business, a neighborhood bakery and cafe located in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, coming up with a name was the easiest task on their long to-do list.

“Edge of Sweetness is purposely a nod to the neighborhood where our bakery is located,” says Tyler, co-owner of the new space scheduled to open in early 2017. “From the very beginning, our Edgewater neighbors have been unbelievably supportive of our new venture.”

Some of these neighbors knew the baking pair from the Edgewater Farmers Market, where each Saturday from May through October they had booths representing their then separate businesses: Kate’s Cookies and Homemade Sin Bakery. “What they didn’t know at the time, was that we had decided to merge our two baking businesses and open our own bakery spot in Edgewater – in the retail spot previously occupied by True Nature health store,” says Merrill.

Once the recurring farmers market customers learned of their plans, the word began to spread and the community outreach began. “We immediately had neighbors offering their professional services to help get our doors open – gardening, structural sketches, and bookkeeping, just to name a few,” says Tyler. And the support didn’t stop there.

Edge of Sweetness announced earlier this month that it is raising funds via a rewards crowd- funding campaign on IndieGoGo to finish the development of their local bakery and coffee shop. The company set out to raise $30,000 on IndieGoGo to purchase and install two pieces of large bakery equipment – a double stack convection oven and a walk-in cooler/freezer.

“The great news is that Edge of Sweetness in currently under construction and slated to open around the new year, explains Tyler, “We have personally invested over $200,000 towards building permits, architectural plans, construction costs and the purchase of bakery equipment. We just need help getting two of our remaining large pieces of equipment.”

And once again, the Edgewater community stepped up.
